Reviews

”…a highly commendable and rigorous scholarly contribution to the study of right-wing terrorism. It offers a comprehensive and well-structured analysis of the evolution of this phenomenon across multiple historical periods, providing readers with a nuanced understanding of its development and manifestations over time.” • Bernhard Blumenau, University of Andrews

“With a global scope that ranges from postwar Europe to Latin America, South Asia, and the United States, Hof brings clarity, depth, and nuance to a subject often overshadowed by studies of Islamist or left-wing extremism.” • Florian Hartleb, Modul University Vienna

Description

Through vivid case studies set in diverse historical and social contexts, Tobias Hof traces the global evolution of right-wing terrorism across time and continents – spanning the mid-nineteenth century to the present day – revealing how terrorist movements have transformed, adapted, and connected through transnational networks. Exploring their shifting ideologies, motivations, and inner workings, he uncovers the uneasy ties between terrorist groups, conservative elites, and state security forces. Both sweeping in scope and rich in detail, he offers readers an unprecedented understanding of the deep historical roots and enduring dynamics of right-wing terrorism.

Tobias Hof is Associate Professor for History and German Studies at the University of Toronto. He was previously the 2022/2023 Hannah Arendt Visiting Chair at the Munk School at the University of Toronto, DAAD Visiting Professor at UNC Chapel Hill (2014–18) and a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Washington University in St. Louis (2013–13).  He received his Ph.D. from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich in 2009 and his Habilitation in 2018, where he still teaches as a Privatdozent. He is the author of Galeazzo Ciano: The Fascist Pretender (2021) and Geschichte des Terrorismus (2022) and has published many articles on the history of terrorism, counterterrorism, fascism, and Ethiopian famines.
